Google Apps now lets you share Docs, Slides, and Drawings without forcing recipients to sign in

Google today announced it has tweaked the way sharing works for Docs, Slides and Drawings. Recipients no longer have to sign in or create a Google account if they don’t have one.
This is particularly useful for Google Apps customers looking to share files outside of their domain. If the recipient does not have an email address linked to an existing Google Account, he or she will still be able to view the document in question without taking any extra steps.
If a file is shared with edit or comment permissions, however, the receiving user must still sign in with a Google Account in order to edit or comment on that file. In other words, signing in is now optional as long as the file in question is directly shared with the recipient but comes with no other requirements.

App Store stops by 950K apps on its way to 1 million

Last time Apple checked in during its Q3 2013 earnings report it announced the App Store was home to 900,000 apps and over 375K designed specifically for iPad. Today, the App Store has now reached 950,000 apps and quickly approaches 1 million with Apple accepting 50K new apps in the last two months alone. The news comes from app discovery service Appsfire, which regularly tracks new and updated apps added to the App Store.
Apple often celebrates milestones for its App Store with some type of giveaway or contest for users. Earlier this year it made a number of premium apps available for free to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the App Store and also gave away a $10,000 App Store gift card to announce the 50 billionth app download. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Apple do something similar for the 1 millionth app on the App Store.
Apple has likely seen an increase in new app submissions in recent weeks, as a long list of developers update and release new apps to accompany last week’s launch of iOS 7 and the new iPhones. At the current rate, it will take Apple just another couple of months to hit the 1 million mark.

9 Apps Draining Your Phone's Battery

Show As List
Whether you're an Android or an iPhone user, odds are you have a gripe or two about your phone's battery life. It's the number one complaint among cell phone users, and unfortunately, there haven't been many breakthroughs in cell battery tech. As apps continue to get more sophisticated, they're also sucking more of the life out of your phone's battery.
Almost all smartphone users download apps, which explains why we're all familiar with the agony of being down to 10% battery by 5 p.m. We're not suggesting you should give up your Twitter or Google Maps apps, but learning which of your apps are the most battery draining can help you make smarter decisions using your smartphone.
While these nine common apps in the above gallery can have a negative effect on your phone's battery usage when used improperly, most of them are less draining with the proper settings.
Some tips for making the most of your precious battery juice:
  • Keep Location Services off until you need it. Maps are a no brainer, but there are tons of apps that use your phone's GPS to determine where you are in the world. Services like Yelp and Google Now are also going to pinpoint your location on the map, so it's best to just keep this feature turned off until you need to figure out where you're headed next.
  • Avoid apps with lots of advertisements. Games are the biggest culprit here. Those ads are constantly refreshing, sucking up your precious battery life while doing so.
  • Keep your 3G or 4G and Wi-Fi off when not in use. You don't need to completely stop using your phone's Internet connection, but if you want that battery to last all day, turn off the cell connection and Wi-Fi when you're definitely not going to be using it, like when you're at your desk and using your computer anyways. It'll also eliminate those pesky phone notification every time you get a new email.

Could Oyster be the Netflix for books?

oyster-books-620xaFORTUNE -- Could Oyster be the Netflix for books? It's the question many industry-watchers have been asking since last October, when the New York City-based startup received $3 million in funding led by Founders Fund.
Today's launch of Oyster in Apple's (AAPL) App Store gets us closer to an answer. With Oyster, subscribers get unlimited digital access to more than 100,000 books on their iPhones for $9.95 a month. Backing from a venture capital firm with the star power of Peter Thiel gave Oyster an important seal of approval, but up until now, with just over 100 users trying out the service in beta, it's been virtually untested.
Oyster's founders don't shy away from the Netflix (NFLX) comparison. Even the interface "feels like the Netflix experience," says co-founder Willem Van Lancker.

Google’s browser becomes a true platform with today’s launch of Chrome Apps

Google has announced the launch of Chrome Apps today in a bid to establish the Web browser as more of a platform in itself.
The new apps are similar to what the Chrome Web Store already offers, but instead of launching in the usual looking browser, it launches sans address bar and navigations buttons, essentially making them look and feel more like desktop apps you’re used to using on PCs or Macs.

Predictive Apps Are The Next Big Thing In App Development

This post is based on published research. Forrester clients can read the full report here: Predictive Apps Are The Next Big Thing
Developers And Their Business Counterparts Are Caught In A Trap
They swim in game-changing new technologies that can access more than a billion hyperconnected customers, but they struggle to design and develop applications that delight customers and dazzle shareholders with annuity-like streams of revenue. The challenge isn’t application development; app developers can ingest and use new technologies as fast as they come. The challenge is that developers are stuck in a design paradigm that reduces app design to making functionality and content decisions based on a few defined customer personas or segments.
